Space Exploration – the benefits

Recently in our class we have been learning about Space and Space Exploration.

We have started to discuss the benefits of space exploration and questioning: why continue?

One of our RE topics has been the issue of justice.

We started to discuss the problems here on earth, the poverty and world hunger.

We looked at the amount of money spent on Space exploration and had a debate about whether that money would have been better spent on solving the problems here on Earth.

Write back and tell me what you think?

Do you think we need to continue Space exploration to benefit mankind?

Or do we need to solve problems like world hunger?

How has space exploration changed your life?

  1. I don’t think it’s good to send spacecrafts into space and explore space; we already know enough and the satellites can collect information if an asteroid comes anywhere near earth. Besides we are using so much money sending spacecrafts into space and we have so many poor people in the world starving. The poor people have children; how can they afford to feed them if there is so much money going to space exploration. I think we have to stop exploring space and let the poor people have a chance in life. We know lots about space already so why waste a lot of money sending spacecrafts into space. Think about it.

    • Well written Roshan, but what about all the benefits that have come from space technology which we all use in everyday life? Do you think that some of the technology could actually be used to help solve world hunger?

  2. I don’t think technology can solve world hunger. It would be better if they stopped sending spacecrafts into space. That’s my opinion.

  3. Space exploration is very good. However I think we should stop wasting billions of dollars on it as we already have satellites to talk to people over the world. We should use the money wisely such as giving it to charity. We have already discovered a lot about space. Space exploration should continue only when there are no poor people left. Although we could continue only doing it once per year.

    • Thanks for your comments Aaron. Some good points. But do you think that we can ever solve the poverty in the world and do you think there may ever be a world without poverty? It would be great, wouldn’t it?

  4. I think it is a better idea to not continue spending money on space explorations because why continue risking people’s lives by sending them out to space. Because if you spend all your money on rockets, what would you have to buy food for your family. So you have to choose carefully with what you buy with your money! Plus there are more poor people out there asking for food and water, you don’t want to be one of them, so of course you do not want to spend your money on a spacecraft! You think about it!
