Figurative Language

What is Figurative Language?

Have a look at the different types of figurative language and how they are used in sentences:

a simile, uses “like” or “as” to make a comparison.

The ball streaked across the field like a meteor.

an idiom, is a phrase that means what it says, even if it doesn’t make sense. 

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.  OR  Get off your high horse.

a hyperbole is an exaggeration

The extra point kick missed by a mile.

an alliteration is the repetition of a sound in a sentence or series of sentences.

Samantha soared down the street on her sleek skateboard.

a metaphor suggests that two different things are the same thing.

Life is a curly slide full of twists and turns.

a personification makes a non-human thing seem human.

The verb in the sentence shows the human quality.

The tree invited us to come and play.

 an onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like the noise or action it is describing.

The jet zoomed across the sky.
