The Science of Addictive Food – Look at your food labels!

I know you will find this video quite fascinating.

Did you know that there is actually a science

which goes behind the preparation of packaged foods?

Do you agree with what was said in the video

about how packaged food makes you feel when you eat it?

When was the last time you ate processed, packaged food?

How can you make better, more informed choices

about what goes in your mouth?

How you can substitute ” fatty, sugary salty, addictive packaged foods

“for healthy, fresh, non-addictive foods that are in fact good for you?”

Reading a food label

Hi everyone

As we continue our Healthy Living, Healthy People study we will now consider food labels.

Have you ever stopped to look at a food label?

Watch the following video.

Are you getting the right amount of fibre or is there

too much salt, or carbohydrates, or sugar,

in the packaged foods you are eating?

Do you know what each number stands for? What is each good for?

Did you realise that sugar can come under so many headings?

See if you can work out how much of the good nutrients

you are really getting when you eat packaged foods.

Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables

Hi everyone
Continuing our topic of healthy eating, one of our teachers has brought this YouTube video to our attention.
Watch the video and see what really happens.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2nSECWq_PE
Did you know that this happened to our fruits and vegetables?
Are you aware of the amount of food that is wasted because some fruit and vegetables have imperfections?
What do you think? Would you buy fruit and vegetables if they were cheaper, but had some imperfections? I would love to hear what you think. Write back and tell me.

Healthy Eating on a Budget!

Today, we continued our healthy eating.

Our teachers showed us how easy it is to eat tasty, nutritious food

without breaking the budget!

Again, we fed 50 people for just over $50.00.

There was plenty of food and we all returned for seconds and thirds.

Some people even returned for fourths!!

This is what we ate today:

Firstly, pasta bolognese.

These are the ingredients:

ONIONS, GARLIC, HERBS, MINCED BEEF,

TOMATOES FOR A RICH SAUCE AND PASTA.

ALL TOGETHER IT MADE FOR A HEARTY, FILLING, TASTY MEAL.

The final product was delicious!

The second meal we had was Fried Rice. It wasn’t just ordinary fried rice.

It contained so many ingredients.

It included rice, prawns, chicken, bacon, egg, spring onions, sausage, and broccoli.

These two meals included the three main food groups which make up a balanced plate:

CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEIN AND VEGETABLES.

We were very full after this meal.

These two meals were very easy to prepare.

They were filling, healthy and nutritious.

They were also not as expensive as one might think.

WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM THIS TODAY?

We learnt that it is cheaper and more nutritious to eat at home!

It isn’t that difficult to prepare healthy food!

MINUTE TO WIN IT – GAMES and HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES

This week it is

HEALTHY CHOICES WEEK

at our school.

Our Integrated Studies topics Healthy Living, Healthy People and Commonwealth Games have allowed us participate in many new and exciting activities.

As you can see from previous posts we have already completed many interesting activities on healthy eating, including dental and oral hygiene.

Today was no exception!

We had a fun afternoon playing five different “MINUTE TO WIN IT” games. We learnt that although some of the games looked easy, it wasn’t until we really tried them, that we discovered they were really quite difficult, and almost impossible! We also learnt about group co-operative skills, and that just playing games can help our fitness whilst having fun at the same time!

The rotation activities included, rolling marbles down a table, rolling a ping pong ball down a tape measure into a glass, maintaining a feather in the air without touching it, bouncing pencils into a cup and blowing a deck of cards off the top of a glass!

We hope you enjoy watching our short video!

BENEFITS OF HEALTHY EATING – A WELL BALANCED PLATE

As part of our healthy eating topic, we designed some plates for art.

We piled them full of proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables and salads.

We used crepe paper to design the food on our plates.

We enjoyed completing this art activity.

When we finished, we wrote our poetry, to reflect what we had learnt!

We hope you enjoy reading our poetry, and viewing our art.

Don’t forget to watch the video on the benefits of eating fruit and vegetables

at the start of this slide show.

Dental Health and Oral Hygiene

Today, the 5/6’s had a special talk

from two visitors from the Dental Health Clinic.

This incursion was part of our Integrated Studies topic,

Healthy Living, Healthy People.

We learnt so much today and we know

we have to look after our teeth because we want them to last!

We were also very happy to each receive a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Thank you.

Healthy Food Choices

Our first week of Term 3 has been a busy one.

We have spent a lot of time discussing healthy food choices.

What should we put on our plates?

How do I balance the types of foods I put on my plate?

We hope you enjoy watching our first Voki Presentation.

PLEASE BE PATIENT AS THE VOKI LOADS ON EACH PAGE.

LISTEN CAREFULLY.
